The division is made up of seven branches

BRANCH 1 provides support to the Cabinet Delivery Group for children and young people (CYPDG) and has a lead role in taking forward and co-ordinating the work prioritised by CYPDG. It takes the lead in the delivery of the integrated children’s services agenda, including the development of integrated children’s services planning (and support to local networks across Scotland of children’s services planners) and the Changing Children’s Services Fund. In addition, it has responsibility for the Children, Young People and Families Unified Voluntary Sector Fund.

BRANCH 3 is responsible for the child protection reform programme, projects include the Children’s Charter, Framework for Standards, Child Protection Committee Guidance, inter-agency child protection training, child death and significant case review and public information and awareness raising. The branch is also responsible for the implementation of the Protection of Children (Scotland) Act 2003 and the Vulnerable Children Guidance on young runaways and sexual exploitation.

BRANCH 5 is responsible for the development of the quality improvement framework for services for children, young people and their families. BRANCH 7 – Bichard Bill team.
Branch 7 is responsible for taking forward the development of legislation which will provide a framework for an improved vetting and barring scheme applicable to those working or applying to work with children and/or vulnerable adults. This Bichard Bill takes forward the principal recommendations made by Sir Michael Bichard following his enquiry into the systemic failures that were highlighted by the murder of two schoolgirls in Sohom in 2003. It will build on existing child protection legislation, notably the Protection of Children (Scotland) Act 2003 as well as creating new protections for adults at risk, including a list of those barred from working with them.
